All that is Old is New Again Posted at 03/02/10 - 04:03 PM

There are a few things to catch up on.   I could not pick one topic, so I will provide a few.

Craig's List is Now in Billings

Craig's list is a free online classified ad website.  It was started in San Francisco and has grown in popularity.  It is a no nonsense design.  Not flashy.

Craig's List expanded to metropolitan areas first, and then to states.  Until just recently Montana was a single listing.  It was not a real practical way to find something considering our vast geography.

Someone must have looked at a map from Craig's List, because now Montana is divided up into, Billings, Bozeman , Butte, Great Falls, Helena, Kalispell  and Missoula

I have used it to buy a car and some computer parts.  It is the kind of thing that will become more effective as it is discovered.  It is likely to put classified ads out of business.  If you are selling something, you can add a photo.   You can choose to be contacted directly, or anonymously through email from Craig's List.  Your email is concealed from the readers of the ad until you are ready to make contact.

This is a useful site, that also has risks.  There are many scams that are carried out on Craig's List.  Avoid items that are not from the area.  Craig's List has some helpful tips on how to avoid scams

Facebook

I have enjoyed using Facebook.  I have made contact with people I have not seen since high school.   It is a nice way to also keep up with family.  It is a safe way to share photos and new with trusted people in your life.

I am not the only one enjoying it.  Facebook was started in a college dorm room, and now has over 350 million users worldwide.  It is fair to say that it is a phenomenon.  People use Facebook with their computers and their phones.

Facebooks popularity has gained attention from advertisers (they were missing 350 million people).  You will see ads from familiar national brands down to your local businesses up the street.  You will also see some ads that you finally thought you had gotten away from with modern spam controls.  You have to understand with this popularity the snakes also come out of the grass. Buyer Beware

What to do on Facebook when you have said howdy to all of those friends and family.

Games..There are many of them that run in Flash.  The most popular is a game called Farmville.  It can definitely take some time from you.

Play with caution.  These games will ask for real money from time to time.  The game maker Zynga made over $20 million dollars off of their "free" games last year.

Facebook uses your email address for log on.  If it ends up in the wrong hands you may become the target of a fraud scheme.  The same way that you may receive emails pretending to be your bank or paypal.

Have lots of fun!
